A vibrant district in Greater London, is part of the London Borough of Islington, which was formed in 1965 by merging the Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Finsbury. As one of the smallest boroughs in London, it is home to around 300,000 residents and is popular among first-time buyers, City workers, middle-class families, affluent young couples, and creative students.
Originally named "Gisla's hill" by the Saxons in the 11th century, the area was later known as "Isledon" before evolving into "Islington" by the 17th century. From its humble beginnings as a hamlet, Islington gradually grew into a bustling village, with development spreading along Upper Street and Essex Road. The 19th century saw a significant transformation, with the creation of the High Street and the grand terraces and squares of Barnsbury.
Today, Upper Street is the heartbeat of central Islington, known for its fashionable shops and lively nightlife. Camden Passage, one of London’s premier antique hubs, draws collectors and those seeking unique gifts, while Chapel Market remains a popular spot for daily shopping, offering a traditional street market experience.
Islington is also a hub for higher education, hosting City University London and London Metropolitan University. Its excellent transport links, including ten tube stations, provide easy access to both the City and the West End.
In recent years, Islington has become increasingly upscale, with rising property prices attracting notable residents like Lily Allen, Dido, and comedian Jimmy Carr. Despite its growth, Islington retains a unique charm, balancing its rich history with a modern, cosmopolitan vibe.
